The Mysteries of Life

So, on Sunday while we were driving to and from a meeting in Austin about the diaconate, we prayed a rosary on the way down using the glorious mysteries. On the way back we decided to try something different. We came up with the Mysteries of Life. The results were so good that I feel called to share it here. These mysteries have taken me in many different directions during my prayer time, everything from my childhood, the lives of my children, my spiritual life, and the life of the church.

 First mystery, Conception – Psalm 139:13 You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. Luke 1:31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

There are the obvious thoughts of conception of life. But I also think of conceiving new thoughts or callings.

Second mystery, Birth – Luke 2:6-7 While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. John 3:7 Do not be amazed when I told you, ‘You must be born from above’.

Childbirth and new life are wonderful things as is the birth of new life in Christ and new beginnings.

Third mystery, Adolescence – Proverbs 22:6 Train a boy in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not swerve from it. The prodigal son, Luke 15:11-32.

Adolescence is a hard time in the life of children and parents. Pray for both to have patience.

Fourth mystery, Adulthood – Luke 2:52 And Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before god and man.

These are great days in the life of a parent when their children reach adulthood and go out to hopefully fulfill the call of God in their lives.

Fifth mystery, End of Life – 2 Corinthians 5:17 So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.

Certainly death is real but so is the promise of new life. Praise God for the old life that has passed away and the new life He gives us in his son, Jesus.
